Chapter Eighteen

“A delaide, take a seat next to your sister. Since the other room is preoccupied now. Let’s get this squared away, shall we?” Charlie’s voice was firm, a slight edge of impatience evident as he gestured to the chair beside Winnie.

I moved to sit next to her in the chair James had occupied when I was there the day before. James sat next to Charlie on the other side of the table. The room was unchanged—fifty shades of grey, cold, stark, lifeless. What the place really needed was a rug, a couple of throw pillows, and some plants. Though real plants would never survive, not just because of the lack of sunlight but because of the oppressive, negative energy that seemed to permeate the air.

From the look on Charlie’s face, I knew now wasn’t the time to mention my sudden fascination with the police station’s decor. A smirk tugged at my lips. I couldn’t believe of all things, this was what I was thinking about while Winnie and I were sitting in an interrogation room.

“What’s so funny, Ms. Doyle?” Charlie’s voice snapped into its authoritative police tone so quickly it was like whiplash.

I wiped the smirk off my face. “I’m sorry. When I get nervous or anxious, I tend to get giggly.”

Winnie groaned, dropping her head into her hands. “You still have that issue?”

I elbowed her gently in the ribs. “I can’t help it.”

She lifted her head dramatically. “Do you know how hard it was to play hide and seek with you and the neighborhood kids?” She turned to James and Charlie, launching into one of her favorite anecdotes. The two men exchanged a look of disbelief but didn’t interrupt. Once Winnie started, it would take something tremendously cute, like puppy kisses or a squirrel nibbling an acorn, to stop her.

“I had a rivalry with the Newton Twins up the street. I pulled Addie into this frenemy situation more than once. I mean, how could I not? There were two of them and only one of me. One summer, I begged Addie to help me beat them in the ultimate hide-and-seek competition. The person who lasted the longest without getting caught would win our summer allowance.” At this point, Winnie turned and stared daggers at me, still salty about something which happened more than fifteen years ago. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat, clearing my throat as the nervousness threatened to spill over.

James didn’t seem to mind my unease. “What happened?” he asked, his curiosity piqued.

Winnie turned her gaze back to them. “I was the seeker for the Doyle team, and Isaac was the seeker for the Newtons. I was so close to finding Thandie when, out of nowhere, I heard the loudest giggle-snort from across the creek. At first, I thought it was a wild pig or something.”

At that point, my body betrayed me, and I let out the same snort I had that day. No matter what I did, when I got nervous or anxious, I would snort and then laugh.
